ABOD, in 1995 written by Norman Brody
On November 1955 during the Suez Crisis we used a Customs warehouse on the docks at Port Said, we used the second floor as an Advanced Base Ordnance Depot, the first floor was a customs hall with thousands of cigarettes belonging to the Egyptians, sometimes we were lucky, and took some of these cigarettes unnoticed, at that time we were living at an old frugt, and vegetable market, after cleaning it out, we called it the Alamo as it was a 3 walled compound with 2 large gates at the one end, I remember we used to play cards using the cigarettes instead of money, and some times there was hundreds of cigarettes in the kitty, I also remember using monopoly money to pay for things in Port Said as the monopoly money looked just like the BAFS( ( we had many games including monopoly in in our stores) we were payed with, this only lasted a few days before it was discovered. I know that this was unlawful, but I guess that, at that time we assumed that it was for payment at being called up again, and being sent to Egypt, after being demobbed 6 months earlier and having been stationed in Egypt for 2½ years previously. By the way I enjoyed my stay in Egypt (both times) and never regretted signing on, and would do it again, if I was 50 years younger. |
