Gulf War in 1991
written by Ian McCulloch

Prior to moving into Iraq I told my soldiers to up thier vigilance and be aware of possible insurgence. One of my Lance-Corporals asked if he could borrow my vehicle to go on night duty in the CV as we were harboured up some distance away. I agreed and asked him to shout me when he was taking it.

He approached the vehicle at around 2345 and shouted, quietly, BOSS it's me, Jolly. He did this several times without any answer, and he said, I,am taking the vehicle. As he got in to the vehicle he placed his weapon in the rack and at that moment I emerged from the passengers footwell and bit his arse as he stuck his head out the window to reverse. He squeeled like a pig from the fright and started trying to kick backwards to fend of, whatever. As he shouted several of the nearby soldiers came, from thier dugouts, running to assist only to find me in absolute stitches.

When he arrived for roll call at 0700 next morning I called out his name and rather than calling out Sir, he told me to F..k off to which the entire troop including myself burst in to laughter. It was all calmed down and eventually I was forgiven. He has sworn however to get me back, something, so far, he hasn't done. I did expect it at the re-union just a few months back.
