RAF Shinfield Park, in 1955 written by Denis Wilson
Transferred to Shinfield Park in July 1955, leaving behind my chosen area for service- Yorkshire- was a traumatic experience. Barely been south of the River Trent! Within 24 hours of arrival, I was "on a charge" for omitting to note that I was down for duty guard on my fist full day at the camp.
Full of self-pity, I sought consolation at my nearest church, where I was to meet a number of fellow-Shinfield Parkers, and who welcomed me into their midst. In turn, they also introduced me to the OD Padre, one Gordon Armstrong. Within weeks he, also, was to introduce me to one of ghis young people- a girl- and we fell in love. Married now for 50 years, with four children and five grandchildren, we both have much to thank National Service for. |
