REME 12th armoured wk/sps att 3 base wk/sps Benghazi in 1954 written by Kennth Spence
After working 7 days a week 12 hour shifts, days about on a 35 metre gas slit furnace I was pleased to receive my call up papers. 53/18. I had spent almost 18 months in Cyrenaica dist. I said goodbye to my co-worker Staffy Brittle, at the steel plant. On my way back home we put down at El Taffa airport in Malta and I was enjoying an ice cold gasoosa in a Valletta beer hall, when suddenly I heard the unmistakable voice of my old mate Staffy. He was sitting at another table. "Hi," I said, "where are you going to?" He replied, "Benghazi, have you any idea where it is?" Talk about a small world!
