Kai Tak, Hong Kong in 1946
written by Robert Farren

I arrived in June 46 from Java via Singapore aboard the P&O Boat Chitral. The Sqdn (110) was billeted in a former school in Kowloon.Later we moved into some flats in Argyll Street and eventually down to the Airfield in nissen Huts. The Sqdn had Dakotas and was running virtually as an airline doing scheduled trips to Singapore via Saigon. Trips were also done to Pekin and,I think, Shanghai.

88 Sqdn were also there with Sunderland flying Boats. After Wartime UK, India and Java, HK was almost heaven. I stayed there until August 48 when the Sqdn was disbanded. Sadly one of our Dakotas crashed in September 46 and, being 6ft,I was one of the volunteers for the Firing Party at the Funeral. All 19 on board were killed.

I returned to HK in June 1997 with a Royal British Legion Pilgrimage and was able to lay Poppies on the graves at Happy Valley Cemetary. I then learned that Col.Cyril Wild was one of the victims. He was the interpreter with General Percival at the surrender of Singapore to the Japs.I have great memories of my time at Kai Tak. Names I remember in the Radar Section were Streak Franklin, Wilf Thorrington,Ernie Bonner, Sandy Sandford. Also Chiefy Gelly and Sgt Disbury of the Wireless Sction. I wonder how many are still on the perch.
