R.A.F. Abu Sueir Canal Zone in 1950 written by Joe (geordie) Maughan
I remember in late 1950 or early 51, I was duty drive on this particular night. looking through the orders I found one that said, a car had to go to the armory to collect an armorer, then to go to Ismalia and pick up two Officers. When it was time to leave,I picked up the armorer and he started putting some fire works into the car. then off we went to Ismalia for the Officers. On the way back to camp I was told to put out my lights and pull off the road onto the airfield. Our first stop was at the tower where we captured the airman on guard. We then pulled over to the perimeter fence and the armorer started throughing these fire works over the fence. After a short while we heard the Duty Officers whistle, so we pulled away from the fence and continued further round the airfield. We could see the lights of a jeep following us and not realising every time I applied the brakes the rear lights came on. However we carried on to the top gate, and by this time the car wasn`t running so well after been on the sand. We heard a shout of halt so I pulled up and put the lights on,and there in front of us was a half circle of airman armed to the teeth, behind us was the jeep with two SP`s pointing a bren gun at us. We all jumped out of the car with our hands in the air and a terrified look on our faces. The duty Officer went crazy, he said everyone was trigger happy. |
