El-Adem in 1952 written by Joe Maughan
At El-Adem in 1952 a plane carrying Princess Elizabeth landed, I was standing on the airfield with my ambulance. She came down the steps and walked passed the ambulance on her way to the reception. After a short while she returned, boarded the plane and headed off to Kenya. The flight crew stayed at El-Adem. I was 21years of age on the day the King died. The crew heard of this and I was presented by the Stewardess with a bottle of champagne for my birthday, which was very nice of them. I was back on the airfield when Elizabeth returned and once again she walked passed me, but now she was the uncrowned Queen of England.I shall never forget this time. |
