RAF Halton, RAF Spitalgatge then 224 SEAC Burma in 1943 written by Archie Lennard Orton (Len)
Christmas 1943 was spent at Halton and in the old RAF tradition we were served Lunch by the Officers. I'm sure they enjoyed it as much as we did. Easy to get home from here, bus to Aylesbury and train to Leicester. On the way home I always used to buy a packet of Turkish cigarettes from Aylesbury - foul-smelling things, but 'cool' in those days!Blenheims were the medium bomber at Spitalgate - an operational flying training school. Its hydraulic system was a bit suspect with regards to the undercarriage - many a ;kite' would have his w heels collapse! When one arrived in safely one of us had to climb up to the mid gun turret (which was just a trapdoor when we were training!), retrieve two pieces of adjustable steel 's'-bends, clamber under the wings, being careful of the propellors (which were still going, to keep the pressure up!) and attach them to the wheel struts. |
