Company RASC, Cyprus, Troodos Mountains in 1956 written by Michael B Taylor
I will never forget Operation Lucky Alphonse, an attempt to trap Grivas in the Paphos area, where a stray mortar (probably) started a forest fire in which 21 soldiers, mostly Gordons, were burned alive. We were there with our wagons, on top of the water soaked canopies beating off burning cinders with branches, as the fire roared past in both directions above and below the road we were holding. Cyprus was great; it was the prospect of three years in Catterick that persuaded me to sign myself out. |
