Christmas Island Port Detachment 58/59 in 1958 written by Ken Simpson-Cpl RE
Will remember for ever the time i spent looking after the Port Plant group. Perhaps someone remembers our tent, named "Uncle Toms Cabin." It was well know at the time. I have photos of the tent and the group. Pity they are to large to be accepted. Had a road roller that we named Tramp. Used it to stop the stores truck from which we took a box of chocolate bars to hand out to the Gilbertese kids in the Village. Will never forget the showers or the water rationing or the time we had no soap for weeks. Had to wait for the supply ship.
Kindest Regards to all who served and all who saw the bones in their hands as the bombs went off.
