Suez Canal, Port Said. in 1951 written by Ken Booth
During the 'disturbance' when the Canal workers went on strike, the cruiser HMS Gambia was sent from Malta to sort it all out. members of the ships company were given various jobs and I being of the Electrical department was given the job of mobile crane operator driving the crane and a Stoker was given the job of driving the unit.During the course of the afternoon whilst unloading a barge full of cardboard boxes, one got broken and the East African soldiers saw it contained Beer, which they started to drink and got very stroppy.Guarding the dockyard generally was a Scots Regiment. When their Major got to hear of this trouble he told them to load their rifles and any trouble 'put one in the knee', but see that the Navy didn't die of thirst up on the crane. We were so well looked after that we missed the boat back to the ship at the end of the day.
We of course did get back eventually but the next day were given different jobs, far from any beer! |
