Cyprus in 1960 written by Brian Jones
I sailed to Cyprus in May 60 on HMT Devonshire as a member of 42 Fld Regiment RA LAD REME. We disembarked at Famagusta and went to Karaolos Camp about 5 miles out of the town. Whether the camp would now adays be classed as fit for human habitation is anyones guess, we lived in Nissen huts and worked mainly outside. The cookhouse was a collection of fly infested huts with a diesel fired range that stank to high heaven. Despite this we had a grand time as although we did a lot of IS training we didn't do much work as independence was very close. we did our fair share of drinking ( Pauls at the Midland Bar in Famagusta comes to mind). On independence we moved into a tented camp at Pyla , Tents, Indian Pattern with no sides and always coated with dust. We stayed ther efor a few weeks before moving into Slim Barracks ,Dhekelia , heaven was my home , almost new Barrack Blocks with every mod con, H&C running water and roof fans, a workshop with inspection pits. Over the next two years we spent lots of time in Libya on exercises which were great fun and really interesting. As this was at the end of NS days the work load got progressively higher as the manpower decreased but for all that I look back on my time there ,and particularly my time with 42 Regt as the best years of my army service. |
