Northern Ireland (Op Banner in 1978 written by Michael Bodger
In the early hours of the morning in December of 78 I was on patrol in Belfast with the section, it was very very cold and raining, the wind had picked up. I was squatting in a doorway of a house on a corner near Kennedys Bakery when one of the section commanders suddenly grabbed me and pulled me away from my position. I was cold, wet, miserable and not very alert. A gunman was on the roof of the bakery pointing a rifle of some sort down at me when he was spotted and the Sect Comd no doubt saved my life. Needless to say, I never allowed myself the luxury of inattentiveness? again. |
