Aldershot B4 being shipped out in 1942 written by Edward James Matthews (Ted)
My Father named above told me of the night before he and his pals were shipped out before the North Africa campaign. He told me that they were all on parade ground and before them were what appeared to be a Nun's Choir and the Nun's sang the 'Nun's Chorus' and my father told me that he could feel the hairs on the back of his neck stood up and he and his pals were filled with emotion the atmosphere was electric and besides the sweetest singing there was complete silence.Years later at home with his family after the War every time he heard this song he would go very quiet and we could tell he was moved. He was back there with his pals the night before they all went off to North Africa.
My father also told me a little about his gun with some pride. He said that it could fire a 25lb shell and be converted to fire a H.E round and the firing rate would be 1 shell on the target,1 in the air on-route & 1 in the Breach,it was after El-Alamein that it was discovered that he had burst ear drums
