Norway and Gibraltar in 1939 written by John Wiley
In March 1940 was posted to Norway with 82nd (Essex) Regiment (TA)in 56th (Barking) anti-aircraft Battery. After one month, due to lack of supplies and winter equipment, returned to Scotland aboard HMS Devonshire as did the King of Norway.
Upon return to UK married sweetheart in Custom House, East London. Two days later was posted to Gibraltar with same battery. Did not see wife for the next three years. Was bombed by Italians and Vichy French and vividly recall the Ceremony of the Keys taking place during a bombing raid on the Rock. Also remember a Vichy French plane, flying a white flag of surrender, circling the Rock and being shot down by the Spanish when it strayed over their air space. The crew (two Lieutenants?) were buried on the Rock.
