Belize APC in 1978
written by Dylan Howell

I remember stepping off the C130 at Belize International Airport and as I stepped of the aircraft and took my first breath off Belize air it was like breathing in the air straight out of a sauna. Hot or what? After a few weeks acclimatization we set to work repairing all the rapier sites around the runway at the airport. I remember sitting in the back of a SWB Landrover being driven quite fast along a track which ran parallel with the runway. Then we hit a large pothole and I found myself flying through the air and landing quite heavily on one arm.

I also remember taking a few lads up country for a bit of jungle training whilst a college and I spent the night in Belmopan Police Station Barracks, (not the plushest of hotels). Doing my canoe inland water proviciency out at St. Georges Quay(island) was an experince. It was supposed to be a sub aqua diving course, but guess who jumped onto a broken bottle? The instructor didn't fancy being followed by every shark and barracuda in the area, so I had to swap.

Apart from that though, it was marvelous and if you ever get the chance to go there; do it. Give "The Big C" a wide berth though. Unless you've got your own supply of Penicilin.
