Grand Harber Malta in 1958 written by David Michael Fitch ( Bill )
Traveling to Cyprus in June 1958 aboard the troopship Devonshire, one of our port of calls was the Grand Harber in MALTA, and one of the most vivid memorys I have of that day was as follows.
A young private from one of the scottish regiments much the worse for ware refused to be transported back to the ship by the MPs in there picket boat, and in full view of all, removed his head wear and placed it inside his shirt, and with his boots still on and fully kitted out in his kilt dived into the waters of the grand harber and swam back to the troopship, some several 100 yards. Upon reaching the bottom of the ships ladder an almighty roar of approval went up from the thousands of troops that were lining the rails of almost every ship in the harber, which included many of the US 7th fleet. |
