MY WWII started 2 days before the official Declaration! in 1939 written by RODNEY ANGELL-BAKER
On Friday 1st of September 1939, I was a little lad 10 years of age, setting off with my little brother and sister (and all the rest of our Leeds School), for a 'Place of Safety' Mums and Dads stood on the pavement outside the school, waving bravely as the fleet of Blue Leeds City double-decker buses took their bewildered children away from them carrying little suitcases, little gas mask boxes, and bearing a large brown name label pinned to their coats. That was on Friday, but... war wasn't declared uuntil Sunday 3rd of September - so the Childrens' war started 2 days before, - but there was no sympathetic umpire to shout 'False Start' and send us back home!
