World War II in 1940

 I joined the Welch Regiment on 15 August 1938 and in 1940 joined the SBS Commando. I had to go to Achnacarry to help train 29 American Rangers. After 6 weeks of rain I was sent to No. 12 Commando at Dorchester. After about 9 months the C.O. of 12 Commando, Lt./Col The Lord Sysnby, left to go as Liaison Officer between Commandos and American Rangers with his H.Q. in New York. No. 12 Commando was split between Nos.1,4,5,6 and 9 Commandos. I was posted to 5 Commando who were in the Isle of Wight.We were sent out to India where we did jungle training in Goa Portuguese Territory. Once training was finished, we were sent into Burma. After Burma we were at sea again for a raid on Penang. We were off the mother ship into LCAs, all ready to start the raid, when we were told that the Japanese had surrendered and we were for Hong Kong. When we got to Hong Kong I was to take over the Japanese armoury, which I did. No.1 and No. 42 Commando took over Hong Kong, and No.5 and No.44 Commando took over Kowloon and the New Territory. After taking over the armoury, we also took over the Japanese saki store. So, a good time was had by all!! |
