korea in 1952 written by peter simpson
landed in Kure from Empire Orwell with DAHZB draft as reinforcement for 1st Leicesters. After training in Kure and the snow of Hara Mura battle school, shipped to Pusan and up country to join the Battalion in reserve.
Took over a jeep and moved into battle below Hill 355.Took over from Bob Hall as Ajts. driver when Bob was time expired. Drove for Capt. Anthony Parsons until he was time expired (after serving 9 years in FARELF), and took him back to Seoul.
Then I drove for the new Adjt.(Capt. Sheppard), until I turned over his jeep into a river! Capt.Hamilton (M.T.O.) then sacked me and sent me up to A Coy. as A Coy. driver. A Coy. was then forward Company in the line and my job was to take patrols into no-mans-land and bring up ammo to A Coy etc. Carried on with this until June (1952) I think when we were relieved in the line by the Black Watch.
Met some extremely brave men and great characters in a brilliant unit.
Last sad job was to attend a service for our dead in Pusan Cemetary.
Picture is myself (left) and my mucker Gerry Wood who drove the cinema truck in Korea and became a lifelong friend. |
