RAF Germany in 1977
written by Cliff Summerskill

Driving Eager Beavers from Gutersloh to Depot 90 during the Harrier Force war reserve transfer. I particularly remember the day a cluster bomb dropped from the top stack of a Hippo and Drag, we naivly thought it would explode. Drivers and suppliers were running up near vertical blast walls to get out of the way while the armourers rolled up with laughter. I looked down at my FLT guide, a great welsh guy called Lance Organ (I kid you not) who was glued to the spot and so white he was almost transparent, I think I need to change my underwear after that one.

Spearpoint '76, I was with 18 SQN HQ flight at Sharfoldendorf, a lovely camp that only opened during deployments. I remember the german nurses' home over the valley, and the rush to acquire binoculars (what can I say? I was young and stupid)and the Britannia aircraft outside the camp gates. It had crash landed in the valley, the runway was too short for it to take off had it been repaired and it was too old to cannabalise so it was sold, hauled up the hill & converted into a restaurant. I had a very nice Jaeger Schnitzel after end-ex. I also remember Jimmy Carter won the election that year and 26 people died during the deployment. The army medics smuggled porn (see apology above) and beer in their ambulances.

18 Sqn Mobility Flight, based in the old railway station on camp. Hot summer days sorting out tentage and other equipment outside on the ramp. A good tan, Elsa's omelettes in the Deutsche Canteen and the very large red paint locker on the ramp full of beer (we did favours for people with cases of Warsteiner and Lowenbrau as payment)
