english channel in 1944

 i was just a 2nd class stoker on HMS
Bleasdale a hunt class destroyer we were
2 stokers doing a watch in the boiler
room the stoker p/o said to me you can
go up top but come down in two hours &
releive your oppo ,i went to mess deck &
asked this leading stoker give me a hair
cut(he was the barber)we were only doing
a few knots as we were going up the
estuary to Antwerp ,my hair cut was just
half way done when all of a sudden the
ship lifted went over on its side the barber dropped his comb & scissors shot off to his station & i was left on my own i had no idea @ the time what had
happend till i got down the boiler room
& their was all panic stations going on
with the stoker p/o shouting the odds
at me to get the other boiler flashed
because we were doing a full astern & he
wanted full steam up well we came off
o.k but i got a right earfull for not
being there quicker i thought i was!nt
