415 Maritime troop Stonecutters HK. in 1975 written by David Commerford
Maritime used to be a part of 56 Sqn Gurkha Transport, Then we became independent as 415 Maritime Troop and moved to Stonecutters Island.South Shore with its jetty, sheltered moorings and existing bulk fuel facilities was the obvious choice and we took over an old ex Naval office block which had been until our arrival a club for the Ordinance ammunition squadron. The Island was Hong Kong's ammunition storage and until our arrival the only military presence was Ordinance at ammunition jetty and The M.C.T.C. at the old prison at south shore. But as they were on the point of pulling out our arrival was not welcome, especially as we forced the closure of their only on island recreational club.
We were mainly senior ranks and as our mess was now on the mainland the single men had nowhere to live. An ideal building existed. The old Naval Officers Mess,The C.B.F. was approached and a request was made to open the Mess to Cpls. and Senior Ranks alike, but to be run strictly as a Sergeants Mess. It was a roaring success. It was the strictest Mess I was ever in the standards being set by the Junior Ranks. I was privileged to be the first treasurer and watched the Mess become one of the richest in what was the colony. If any one was a member or a guest share your memories with me .
