Mediteranian Fleet in 1955 written by Roy Paton
The loss of 3 shipmates on Boxing Day 1955 whilst urgently leaving Malta for Cyprus to search for a submarine supplying General Grivas & the Eoka Terrorists. In gale force condition the entire Cable Party were swept in all directions both on and off deck.
A 53 year old Maltese Tug Boat seaman
saved 3 of the 8 swept overboard and was later awarded The George Cross (See
the Malta Times of 26.12.1955!)Whilst still searching for arms smugglers at Cyprus in November 1955
we took part in the Suez Campaign and, whilst being serviced by an MFV, the vessel misread his approach and his anchor spikes ripped open the Starboard
Superstructure. We had temporary repairs alongside in Port Said and, much to the distain of our 3 sister ships, we were sent back to Devonport early and spent an unexpected Xmas leave
at home. Memories 1 and 2 are a small part of the numerous disasters that took place during the service in the Med over that 12 nonths. They are too numerous to list and, whilst are still easy to remember, were all part of an interesting 7 years service! |
