how well i remember arriving at 443 bad ammo depot one hot afternoon in april 58.all the other lads were nice and brown and me and my mates were as white as sheets,i think they called newcomers milkbottles for obvious reasons, but we soon went native and blended in. our first accomodation was a basha sleeping six ,not to bad but mossie nets were a must and a regular shake out of the mattress was essential, eventually we moved to keatong to more modern quarters. time passed fairly quickly and i must admit i had many good nights out with my mates ,sometimes having a few to many (??) the city itself was okay but a bit dirty in places and a lot of it was out of bounds--the best places (spoilsports)but hey i liked a challenge. had a couple of weeks holiday in penang ,a lovely place, and did a couple of weeks at a change of air station in the cameron highlands--had a good time there. eventually the demob day loomed and i prepared to leave ,i went to nee soon transit camp for my last night which proved to be a bad night as myself and some of my mates were robbed while we slept off a few goodbye drinks, but with some borrowed bits and pieces i made the flight and am still here to tell the tale all in all it wasn’t a bad trip and i am grateful for the experience--made a few good mates --had a lot of laughs--had some ups and downs, but as i say overall a good time. |
