Suez Canal Zone in 1953 written by John Bruce Purkiss
I went to Port Said on the good ship Devonshire and then went on for a stay at RAF El Firdan, a holiday camp with plenty of sun and sand.Others may not agree with me but my stay was quite pleasant. We had trips to the sailing club at Ismalia and frequent visits to the BlueLagoon. When not there I was tinkering with vehicles in VRF. Gaurd duties were spent either up searchlight towers or strolling around the perimeter fence, taking in the view and wondering how I was so lucky just being where I was. It was not long before this all came to an end and I had to take another sea journey on the Somersetshire, away from Egypt, homeward bound. Such happy days!. |
