A Sunday visit to RAF Spitalgate in 1969
written by Terry jones

It was a warm sunday in late July 1969 that myself and a room mate decided to thumb a lift to Grantham and WRAF Spitalgate well in no time we were on the A1 and no sooner got a lift strait to the camp my room mate had dragged me to this camp because he had pulled a wraf the night before at the camp dance at Swinderby so I went with him for company what struck me about spitalgate was that hill leading up to the camp gates and you had to sign in and in those days you had to be in uniform except the wraf recruits at that time We made our way to the naafi for a sticky bun and a cup of tea well this place was full of wraf recruits and airmen recruits from Swinderby so I decided to go for a walk to a vending area not far away because the Queue in the naafi was big.

My mate had arranged to meet this wraf in the naafi but I ended up being chatted to by a wraf recruit in this vending area so after a while we decided to go for a walk but first I had to sign her out of the camp her name was Christine Smith I think from Heartfordshire it was a brief meeting as that sunday and the following saturday at swinderby was the last I ever so of her because she passed out and was posted to Uxbridge for trade training we went to the evening disco and completely forgot how we could get back to camp I reconised some mates from my flight at Swinderby and there was about six of us making our way to Grantham station to catch a train to Newark we had hoped to catch the last train and we were in luck once at Newark we had to chip in and share the taxi fare back to camp at swinderby.

It was well past midnight and all our names were taken at the guardroom as we were on parade early that monday morning making sure our uniform's were pressed I will never forget my visit to Grantham and RAF Spitalgate and to date I have never been back to see this town but I will one day soon.
