I joined the Welsh Guards as a Junior Gdsm in August 1971,we were the largest ever intake as a junior it went from section/platoon to junior guardsman wing which i understand was near 1000 and the depot was full to the brim, I was in RHINE Platoon our Sergeant was Dereck Greathead and he was a fantastic guy, i really enjoyed the time in the depot training was fantastic although hard for us young wipper snapper my 2 best buddies was Ivor gwilym who went on to a highly credited service and ended up a sergeant well deserved my friend. My other mucker was Roy Morgan from cardiff
Ivor was from Trelewis by the way (i think)we were all in the corp of drums as juniors in the depot both got married and had children but alas I have not been able to track anyone from rhine platoon as I have lost all my photos and I have been trying to get some one that could make contact with me so i could get some copys of our time in the regiment and of course have a few memories rekindled our passing out officer was Lord Loui Mountbatten who sadley was murdered, any way my career was ended before it started due to some stupidity which i ended in hopitall and eventually medicly discharged sadest day of my life very sad.But there you go the milk is spilt what is done is done. well i have babbled on for some time now so good luck to you all take care and hope to chat with you soon all the best Bob Smithy 97
