Winston Churchill's Funeral 1965 in 1965 written by Terence Cawthorne
I was finishing my service and was stationed at 10 Signal Regiment Hounslow. I was duty NCO the night the telephone rang and a voice said activate exercise Hope Not. I opened the envelope and there was a list of people to phone and inform that the great man had died. The regiment was detailed to provide communications between the Tower of London and Hyde Park. This was to link a salute by the RHA with the coffin as it passed from land to water. I was positioned in the boathouse on the jetty by the river. During the practise sessions which took place from 0200hrs. each day till 0600hrs I was able to watch the pallbearers as they came down to the jetty. As it was deep winter and although there was no snow there was vey thick ice on one occasion one of the Guardsmen slipped and the whole party started to slide and wobble. They recovered and continued down the sloping road at half speed (they were slow marching at the time)In the event the actual funeral went off without any problems at our post.
