Army Apprentices School Harrogate in 1954
written by Terence Cawthorne

I joined AAS Harrogate in 1954 and passed out in 1957. During this time I made many friends. Rod Tramaseur (Tram), Pete West Ray Morris, keith (Cakie)Halliwell, Charlie (Geordie) Lightfoot, Chris Longmoor, and a host of others. My best Mate was Doug Dickason because we came from similar military backgrounds being raised in a series of army married quarters. Doug and I were both interested in boxing with Doug reaching ISBA standard. This display of getting into the boxing ring willingly stood us in good stead throughout our three years. This was because there was a culture of bullying prevalent in the school by senior boys on the younger lads. I remember we were always hungry and on freezing cold nights would raid the coke stocks to stoke up the boilers in our spider accommodation. The guys I have named are all now ex Royal Signals either operators or technicians. Thanks to Doug we all me3et regularly at the same barracks in Harrogate once a year in a reunion of the Association Of Harrogate Apprentices. This was re-formed by Doug Badgering Col (retd.) Cliff Walters to get the ball rolling which he did. The AOHA is going from strength to strength. It is a unique experience to meet up with guys one has known so many years ago and to hear how they have fared throughout their lives. I lost contact with all my old mates due to postings. So to join up with them again opened up a whole new avenue in my life. Terry Cawthorne
