RAF Ayios Nikoliaos - Cyprus in 1961 written by John Mcleod
I havent seen Ayios Nikoliaos appear anywhere so I felt I would like to put it on the boards. We all remember our first overseas posting some good some bad. However as a youn 18 year old Moonie and ex boy to boot. Arriving in RAF Pergamos prior to onward movement to Ayios Nikoliaos it was a bit of a shock. Especially doing the usual silly thing your told not too, dont drink iced drinks till you tum acclimatises, so you do so and suffer the consequences. Arrival at Ayios Nikoliaos was also a wee bit different it was surrounded by Army camps 9th Signal regiment and a field squadron and miles of old armour brought over from Egypt lying rotting. AY NIK as it was known was quite nicely situated near FAMAGUSTA a really interesting place with the harbour built by I believe Richard the Lion Heart on his way to or from Crusades, there was also a Roman amphi-theatre at Salamis. The beach stretched for miles. I believed those that lived in Hirings down town had a great time. All spoiled when the Turks and Greek Cypriots started at each other. However a great first posting was Ayios Nikolaos where my claim to fame was at a CSE show when Yana came into the audience and sat on my knew, think of it at 18 years old, she didnt sit for long. The Royal Yacht
visited, now I can view it with binoculars across the River Forth from where I live I wonder if anyone else remembers the 250 mil taxi to Nicosia picked up a car load as it went and on return, as well as being able to roam the island in a hired car without restriction to Belapaise Abbey and Troddos, grapes, oranges and Melons dont you miss them. Yes Cyprus was a positive experience for one Moonie. |
