second world war in 1944
written by hubert spencer

It may be of some interest to portray the work of the wireless operator in Lancasters during WW2. Every morning I would go to 'our' aircraft to check and test the operational condition of my equipment and if any part was unsatisfactory the ground crew would be notified so that the aircraft would be operational that night. We had stipulated frequencies on the receiver to listen to for any messages from base. In the Main Force we were not expected to transmit while approaching or leaving enemy territory. On several occasions, mostly during adverse weather conditions, our navigator would ask me to assist him to confirm where we were, on track or not, by using a loop aerial tuned in to two broadcasting signals so that where the two directions crossed, it would give a rough indication of our position. No aircraft to my knowledge was allowed to fly, even if it was just an air test just after repairs without a wireless operator on board.
