H.M.S.Raleigh- New Entry Stokers in 1954
written by John Sexton

November '54, very 'wet behind the ears' sixteen years old Geordie kid enters the Royal Navy. "Get Fell in" What does that mean? We soon found out quickly. Haircut (scalping) kit issue, "Thank you" Arms bulging " There's more?" "What's this canvas blanket I've got? A Hammock. what is that for?" The recruiting office didn't mention that. Then it's into the 'mess' find the 'heads' 'showers' (what, no bath?) What am I doing here? No turning back.

First night, a few of the forty or so lads in the 'mess' can be heard crying, evn the older ones. Then for the next weeks, no time to dwell on home. "Double here" "Double there" "Stand Still" "Keep Silence", everything to keep you on the go from 'Wakey Wakey' to 'Pipe Down'. Part one couldn't go quick enough. Everyone longed for the 'magic' Part Two. Would it be better?

Part One came and went, part two was upon us and we moved to the 'big boys' area of the camp, away from the 'sprogs'.The pace still was relentless but there was a spirit that had been forged, we knew where we were going and looked to getting our ship. But what did we get ? Barracks, but that's another story.
