RAF St Mawgan in 1960 written by Geoff Clift
During a NATO exercise I was walking back to the hangar after lunch and going past a Mk3 shackleton which was just being armed up with a 2 ton homing torpedo. The armourers were just going back to their workplace when suddenly the torpedo fell out of the aircraft and gently rolled over to a stop. I froze and if it had gone up I wouldn't have been typing this. Several other personnel either threw themselves on the ground or just froze like me! I'll never forget that incident. |
