Cyprus in 1956
written by JAMES McNEILLY FURY

I remember landing in Cyprus 23Jan 56, and going to Famagusta for a week then off to Dhavlos wich is now called KAPLICA,and living in tents until I came home,I was with the H.L.I.I was with B/coy,enjoyed it although as every one knows there was alot of our soldiers murdered over there,no one can forget, must have walked the Panhandle all the time I was there, remember going on the HMS Defender and gettin dropped off on various parts of the Island if there were any info about the EOKA. Did my guard at night on the Panhandle, a bit greepy to say the lest, always imagined see faces during the night, nearly shot a donkey one night, heard the rustle through the trees shouted the HaltStamta Dhur, cocked my bren gun, knees like jelly, out came the donkey (ha,ha) I can laugh at it now then on Oct5 my stupid NCO shot me while we were on patrol on the Panhandle he was carrying a sten gun, and you all know what that was like, it used to go off its self, silly beggar slipped, got sent home in late Nov, to BMH Tidworth demobbed Jan57,joined up again, went into RASC.Ended up in Malaya with 3/coy great time came out 1964.
