written by Donald Kent

Remember meeting my best mate at Bham new st station, we were to become inseperable, he was a 21 year old that had been kept ot of joining up as he worked as a farmer, Dear old Joe Bromley.I was a 17 year old and joined as soon as my parents would sign Raleigh was pretty tough in those days, and out of the 30 od that made our Class, there were about 6 or 7 that didnt make it and were sent home.Up and down heartbreak hill, and the parade ground every morning, the sound of that bugle still makes me shiver, they were great days and our first ship HMS victorious was a great experience, I remember at Portland,we had had a great night out, and while waiting for the liberty boat Joe fell in , he coudnt swim. As he came up for the third time,I grabed his collar and pulled him out. we were both on a charge the next morning,as we had missed the Liberty boat.I went on to join the F A A and joe joined the submarine service.

They were good days, and I would not have missed them for anything. Didnt meet Joe again untill the day he was demobbed,I had jutst been disharged from Haslar hopital and was on my way back to my depot with a wren on my draft and me in charge, and on joining the train at portmouth harbour, I spotted this guy with a large wife and about 6 or so kids around him, coulnt beleive it was Joe. He intrduced me as the guy who had saved his life all those years ago,(I had never thought of that) He abandoned his wife when we got to London, I was two days adrift on my draft, and the wren made her way back on her own and never forgave me. Happy days!
