RAOC 1965-1980 in 1965 written by Iain Leggatt
I joined the RASC as a Boy Soldier in January 1954 and served in the Corps until it was disbanded in July 1965. I was a Third Generation RASCal but, when I was transferred to the RAOC, found the transition made easy for me and anyway I liked the RAOC’s motto: Sua Tonenti Tela – To The Warrior His Weapons. While wearing the RAOC cap badge I had a most enjoyable, very interesting and at times exciting service, and served with the following: HQ Land Forces, Hong Kong 1965-1966; HQ Berlin (British Sector) 1966-1969; HQ Allied Forces Southern Europe, Naples 1969-1971; Depot & Training Centre RAOC, Deepcut May-November 1971; British Embassy, Bucharest 1971-1974; HQ 5 (Airportable) Brigade, Tidworth 1974-1977; HQ UK Land Forces, Wilton 1977-1978. On 1 June 1977 I was appointed WO1 (Conductor) RAOC. I left the Regular Army on 2 November 1978 although served for another two years as WO1 (SSM) RAOC in the Reserve Army. |
