I served with 1st Bn WELSH GUARDS and was sent to the Falklands conflict. We set sail on the QE2 on May 12 1982 ,we arrived in San carlos waters on the Canbera and waited for our orders. We were told to tap through the night but it got change as they wanted us there quickly,so the sent us on 2 war ship"s FEARLESS,INTREPED,my company were the first to disenbark off the Fearless and spent near 7hrs before we got to land ,as it took to long the rest of the Bn was sent round on the GALAHAD.
June 8 the Bn got hit by an air raid in Bluff cove 3/4 of the Bn got hit badly .My coy was not on the ship as we landed a day before and about 5k inland ,I was a Plt Radio op and the words i hear i will never forgett ,the CO,said that this( Call sign was none operatinal) 24/48hrs later we were back in the war as we had R M attached to us ,ther we went on to do a diveversoni attack on tumbledown ,stuck in a minefield and take SAPPERHIL the only position to be taken in brod daylight.
Iwil never forget the corage of all who took part in the conflict, also we must never forget the ones that never came home |
