Gibraltar(1950-1954) in 1950
written by Stanley Hallwood

I went to Gibraltar when I was 9yrs old,our first home was No1 Calpe. We (thats my sisters and I) used to sneak into the tunnel entrance near the Quarters by squeezing through the bars of the security gates, then we would dare ourselves to go in as far as we had a mind to(it was spooky as there was no lighting in there) we normally get as far as th second bend then it got really dark!I would sometimes make a wailing sound frightening the lives out of my sisters(and myself) then turn around and run hell for leather back to the entrance. My sisters would then try to knock seven bells out of me! Great times.

About 6mths after arriving in Gibraltar we wheremoved to No13 Kings Bastion(They used to fire the 6 O`clock gun Gun on the battlements just across the way from our Quarters. The ceremony was performed by Soldiers from 78th Medium and Field Regiment RA stationed at Moorish Castle and Casemates. In 1952(November if my memory serves me right) Myself,Malcolm Cave and Paddy Eastwood took and passed our Bronze medallion in Lifesaving(RLSS)and were made Lifeguard Cadets. The first cadets on the Rock.

1952-3 During this year the Ammunition Ship Bedenham Blew up in the harbour.I was in school when it went up,I was very fortunate that day-Ihad been misbehaving and was moved from my place by the window to the rear of the class almost immediately it seemed the windows blew in and showered over the boy had been moved to my place. He was very seriously injured by the flying glass--he took the full force. There was bedlam that day people running all over the place polce vehicles military vehicles and soldiersmoving around every where. The RAF scrambled a squadron of Vampire jets which forced a Spanish plane to land at the airforce base.Spanish personell were being rounded up.It was absolute bedlam. Iwill remember the incident for the rest of my life.Icould write reams of the happenings on that day but it would end up .like a book.

We left Gibraltar in 1954 and I joined The Army Apprentices School at Beachley.Whereby lies other memories--Some other timemay be.
