Basic training in 1949 written by Terry Carey
Arriving at Catterick on Thursday, 19th February 1949 for basic training we were taken into a hut for documentation. A clerk asked me my religion so I replied, truthfully, that I was an atheist. He looked blank and asked "What's an atheist?" I told him I was and explained that it meant that I didn't believe in God. His reply was, after a pause, "Er yeah, but what's your religion?" After some argument which failed to enlighten him he asked a Sergeant " 'Ere Sarge, what's an atheist?" The man thought for a few seconds and then said. "Oh, it's one of them minor sects - put him down as C. of E." |
