we were 12 wrens and one wren officer in all aboard the ss volendam in 1945 bound for malta. the ship bypassed malta and headedfor haifa where the welsh guards on board disembarked. we then headed for alexandria, egypt. we toured egypt and saw where monty's soldiers fought rommels troops. we crossed the desert to el alamein and then on to mersa matruh. the british troops were gob smacked to see us and gave us a royal welcome. the wrens that i remember were paddy, pauline helen drusilla. pauline had a lovely voice and paddy was my special pal.i remember the days with affection that i spent at H.M.S.Allenby in 1944--45. the wrens that i served with were betty b, betty p, kath jefferies, stella moore and ethel. we were all in the supply branch, i was in naval stores and dished out things like pussers hard--a particularly hard washing soap.i wwent out with a matelot named paddy who came from dublin. he was lovely |
