Abu Sueir, Canal Zone in 1952 written by John BEACH
I was due to go to the Far East from Basic Training at West Kirby, April 51 after only 6weeks square bashing. Had my yellow fever jab, only to find in July 51 I was posted to the Middle East (no yellow jab required!!).When the 'troubles' started that year I was required to go on guard duty, mind you I was only a CLERK. When I went to the armoury to be issued with rifle and 10 rounds of .303 I was told to sign a document staing that I was proficient in the use of firearms! As I had left basic training two weeks early I missed the range practice, so I declined to sign.I was ordered to the Range and let off 10 rounds of .303, 1 mag. of Sten gun and one mag. of Bren Gun and thus I was proficient in the use of firearms and was issued with a rifle and 10 rounds of ammo. Then I was let loose to guard the camp.I will tell theother story about 'Call out the guard' later. |
