RMP Unit Call Out in 1971
written by Raymond CHAN

On 21 Dec 71, a couple of weeks before my posting to the Int Corps, I was on duty as mobile driver in the company of SSgt Ronnie LAMBERT and Sgt Fred ELROD RMP. Whilst parking our vehicle outside the Ocean Bar beyond Lockhart Road and Luard Road (middle of patrol area of Wanchai bars)radio message was received from the Desk NCO that the Duty Manager China Fleet Club rang us for assistance due to disturbance occurred in the main bar.

Without delay we approached to the scene with the siren and blue light on (just installed) in one minute, the SNCOs went in the bar to deal with the case while I was waiting in the vehicle. After ten minutes they came back to the vehicle. Just about when we moved , over ten Irish Guards rushed out from the main bar, without saying a word, we were pulled out from the vehicle and we got beat up, I just used my white belt for defencing myself, three of us were bleeding and badly injured. They went back to the bar after the attack. I immediately called the Uncle Sugar (U.S. Shore Patrol) and Royal Naval Patrol for assistance. Over fifteen patrolmen arrived and we made an arrest of six Irish Guards and placed them in custody in Victoria Bks Guard Room.

We were conveyed to the Sick Bay HMS Tamar for checks and treatment. We bed down at home for the rest of the night when the living in pers were called out to replace our duty. In the following morning, the SIB took our photos of the wound for evidence. After this experience, RMP mobile patrol carried truncheon for duty. As far as I know, that was the only Unit Call Out in Hong Kong RMP history.
