albert Hall london in 1954 written by Iain Leggatt
In November 1954 the Royal Army Service Corps held its Corps Day in the Albert Hall, London. Joe Loss and his band provided a musical programme throughout the event and Joe and each of the band members wore a navy blue blazer bearing the RASC badge on the pocket and had a Corps tie on. The lads of Boys' Company RASC, Buller Barracks, Aldershot, provided some of the entertainment, apparently as volunteers, or so we were told afterwards. A dozen trumpeters of Clayton Platoon (Boys' Coy RASC's Drum & Trumpet Band) blew fanfares up in the gods (no doubt, lounging around smoking and wearing denims since no one could see them - mind you, their music was great!). Excluding these trumpeters and new recruits of Initial Pl, rest of the Coy was put into three teams (wearing all white, blue or yellow PT kit to match the Corps' colours) and we ran to the Redetski March making circles, squares, triangles and counter marches and finished up forming the letters/numbers E II R. Oh, how we laughed... |
