HongKong_SekKong_Castle Peak Bay in 1955
written by Trevor Chapman

I remember the young teenage girls who worked in the cafes & Hairdressers in KamTin Village. On Sunday afternoons they would go with us to the beach at Castle Peak Bay. There would be a crowd of us, maybe ten or more. In Yuen Long, on the way there, they wouldn't walk with us on the street, but always followed behind. They also wouldn't sit with us on the bus, but would sit apart from us chattering & giggling among themselves...We Knew not to acknowledge them, as associating out of work with 'Gweilos'would ruin their reputation. ..

However, when we arrived at the beach, all pretence disapeared, & they would join in all the beach games, with shrieks of laughter, & lots of giggling. & would dash into the sea, daring us to follow them...This was to make it very clear to any strangers that they were accompanied & were not to be pestered...We took our escort duties very seriously & woe betide anyone who tried it on with them. They made some homesick young men forget, for a short time, just how far away we were from the ones we loved. And they loved the attention they got from us, which in turn helped them forget, for a short while, their own sometimes desperate situation.
