West Kirby Hospital in 1953 written by Maurice Coppock
I was placed in the hospital about two weeks after arriving at West Kirby with a dose of Jaundice. The first couple of weeks were a nightmare with a fat food diet, and being confined as being infectious in my own ward. I had to drink gallons and gallons of orange juice, only problem was getting a nurse to supply a bed bottle. On occassion when the urge got to great I would open the window and kill abit of grass and any plants that in the vicinity. When i was finally taken off the fat free diet the menu that day was fish and chips, I really made apig of myself. I was then placed in the solarium at the end of the ward with three other patients. One episode I recall was sneaking out to the camp gaff one night. Unfortunately when we came out it was pooring down so we got soaked. When we got back in we hung our great coats over chairs and stood them on the table in the centre of the room with our caps on top. During the night the nurse did her rounds and on shining her torch in the room was confronted with four airmen ready to jump on her, the screams woke the whole ward. Another black mark for us. All in all my stay became quite pleasant, card playing, tormenting the nurses, and watching the new recruits lining up outside for the jabs. Always the big blokes that fainted, and some before they even got to the table. Unfortunately it being 50 or so years ago I can't remember any of the names of the inmates. It made it easier when I got back to the square bashing as I had learned a thing or two in hospital. |
