Cardington Square Bashing in 1947 written by John Campbell
I joined the RAF on 2nd. November, 1947 at the Recruiting Office in Belfast. From there I was sent to RAF Aldergrove for induction and kitting out. When about to take the oath, the Officer asked me how old I was. And I told him 18 which I was. But after travelling on the trams and buses after leaving school at 14, I was always refused adult fare, so until I joined up I travelled everywhere for half fare. And after we had been sworn in he asked me again and I said my birth certificate showed it. So that was my introduction to the RAF. But afterwards the life was really enjoyable, yes even the square bashing, so long as you were willing to obey orders life was relatively easy. |
