Episkopi in 1969
written by steve murray

I have a scar on the bridge of my nose! Oh yes,and where did you get that scar on the bridge of your nose. Well, you won't believe me if I told you... Living at Epi was a joyous time for me.A member of JFN,the local station radio station ,sunny skies, blue seas, and a very lovely girl whose name I shall keep secret so as not to embarrass. I stared at 5 SU in the compound where I worked alongside the guys with the brains. Teleg ops and the like ! As a lowly Supplier I did originally feel out of place especially at my tender age (a very young and very naive 20)but everybody soon made me feel wanted and part of the team. One of the guys, Stu Leake, was a real good mate. Fancy me,an SAC, having a C/T as a mate! Eventually, the Army took over the Radio Relay system where I was seconded to the Army to teach them the part of the RAF Supply system that they would need. That finished and I eneded up in "D" Hangar where I led a team of Turkish Labourers who seemd to gather whenever I climbed the ladder to reach an item on the top rack in the stores. This was not to catch me if I fell,it was I was told to observe as much of my nether regions as they could looking up the legs of my shorts! Looking back, perhaps I should have been flattered! Then,my next move was to SCAF where I settled for the rest of my tour. Boy,what a fbulous time I had at EPI. My nose scar? Well, as you know or maybe not, our blocks all had balconies and these led to the showers, bogs etc.One night I got up to visit the toilet and it had got just a bit chilly. As I had nothing on, in my drowsy state I started trotting down the balcony to get back to my room which was the last one on the end of the balcony. I didn't stop, ran right into the windowsill and smashed my nose all over my face.Surprisingly enough,I knew nothing until the next day and it all came flooding back Now you know!
