My name is Glyn Williams (stage name Glyn Dawson long serving member of the popular Black & White Minstrels) and I joined the 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment (Airborne) at Xmas 1944. One comrade I remember well was Sergent Bradley Shaw and like me he was sports minded. My platoon officer was Lt Pearson and my platoon Sgt was Sgt Wooldidge. Another comrade who joined up with me was Jimmy Threakal who was the R.S.M.s son. Jimmy finished up as Sergent when I left for the German Civil Labour Organisation in 1947. Captain J.J.J. Robertson was already in the battalion when I joined up with Glyn Evans who came from the Pontypridd area of South Wales. When I left the Army I persued a career singing and dancing with the Black and White Minstrells under the direction of George Mitchell. I am one of the longest serving 'Minstrels' and my stage name is Glyn Dawson. I am now in my 79th year and still very active living in my own home surrounded by a loving family. I would love to hear from any comrades who served with the 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment (Airborne)to reminisce about those glorious days. |
