Canal zone in 1950 written by tony fairbridge
As a child I lived at Moascar Garrison, near Ismailia, in the Canal Zone, Egypt. My late father was there from '47 to '53, and we joined him in '48. Initially we were at 211 Transit Camp, Ismailia, and then moved into a flat in town. We were evacuated to Moascar during the riots following the abrogation of the Suez Canal treaty. I recall listening to machine-gun fire at night, when Egyptians from the arab quarter would try to infiltrate via the railway lines which passed the camp. I thought it very exciting.
Later, we moved to Fayid. Initially we lived in Kensington Village, and later moved to "The Curragh". We used to cross a couple of miles of desert and colimb the Big Flea, and would spend the afternoons at the beach on the Great Bitter Lake. It was a great life for a kid, and when we eventually moved back to UK I found it a very boring place. |
